Please share a memory of Edward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Edward John Hill of Holden, formerly of Daysland, passed away Monday, November 3, 2014 at the age of 86 years. Edward was born September 18, 1928 at Dodsland, Saskatchewan, to (Jack) Isaac John Hill and Janet Johnston Hogg. He was the second child in a family of four; three boys and one girl. The family moved to a farm in the Daysland/Rosalind area in 1939. His involvement in farming started here and often resulted in him being the youngest member of thrashing crews. Stories of his early life usually involved some escapade with horses. He met his wife Betty in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan in 1950; they wed October 16, 1952 at Daysland. They raised a family of four children three boys and one girl. Family for him also included his adopted children; Amy, Mike, and Mark Mickla. Edward was a stockman, his particular interest was horses and cattle. This interest along with family and friends were the constants in his life. He started with farming rental land and then became a heavy equipment operator working on road building and the pipeline, his last venture being trucking. Eventually he combined all of these, taking over his brother Bill's land, and working 35 years for C.S. McDonald & Sons at Ohaton, operating cat and driving truck. During the off season, he worked at the Daysland Auction Market under various owners; Leo Carter, Dave Hutchinson and Russell Sheets, and David Twichell. He later traveled around Alberta, to the Block Brothers Rodeos. He worked with the bucking stock; loading chutes, sorting, penning, feeding, and driving truck and hauling stock when needed. This was the highlight of his life. Left to cherish his memory are his children Lloyd Hill (Laurie Pinchbeck), Lyal (Chris) Hill, Leon Hill, and Lorraine Hill (Jack Noppers); five granchildren Monica Hill (Rocky Hunter), Janet (Roy) Bun, James (Dana) Hill, Mike (Kate) Noppers, and Ryan (Bella) Noppers; three great-grandchildren Sadie and Hudson Hunter, and Sigourney Noppers; sister Barbara Ashton of Edmonton; and sister-in-law Joan Hill of Edmonton. Edward was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth; brothers Lorne and Bill; both parents; and great-grandchild Salun Bun. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 8, 2014 from the Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Interment has taken place in the Daysland Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Alzheimer Society.
