Obituary of Dr. George McIver

Please share a memory of Dr. to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dr. George Dickson McIver of Camrose passed away on Monday, October 13, 2014 at the age of 92 years. Shortly after his birth in Calgary on February 4, 1922, George's parents moved their family to Saskatchewan, living for a short time in Herbert, then settling down in Wolseley, where George graduated from high school. Barely 18, George entered into the Royal Canadian Air Force and served five years, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. Quickly recognized for his superior skills in Morse Code, George was promoted to be an instructor, sending messages and training other soldiers. After World WarII, George attended the University of Alberta, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in 1950. It was during this time, while living at St. Stephen's College dormitory that he met Margaret Lilian Stewart, a dietician at the College. She was looking to have a radio fixed, and George was just the man she needed. He moved to Camrose in 1950 to take over a dental practice, which flourished for close to 40 years. George and Margaret were married in 1951 and had four children. Throughout his life, George wore many hats. If there was an opportunity to be a leader and serve his community and country, he would be there "dressed to impress". George played an instrumental role in Camrose through his involvement in its many clubs and organizations. He was a Rotarian, a Kinsmen, a Barbershopper, a Cub leader, and a Toastmaster…sometimes all in the same night! George was actively involved in the United Church of Canada, and was a Charter Member of the Camrose Amateur Radio League (ham radio). He joined the Masons, became a Shriner, achieved a Past Master position of the Masons, and obtained an honorary life membership. George also received a lifetime membership with the Canadian Dental Association. As recognition of his years of service, George was awarded a lifetime membership in the Canadian Legion. George was recognized as Citizen of the Year for Camrose in 1970. In 2012, he received a most noble and notable accolade, The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Commemorative Medal. Once the snow hit the ground, all of Camrose knew it because George donned his famous red cap. You knew the season changed when the red cap went away and the tan cap took its place. Sundays were the day to put on the "family hat". The McIver clan would embark on family adventures, creating many lasting memories. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Margaret; children, Richard of High River, Cheryl of Camrose, Jim (Dianne) of Wetaskiwin, Dr. Patrick "Pat" of Camrose; grandchildren, Jody McIver (Bret), Justin McIver, Chris Fransen (Darlene), Kara Blackman (Todd), Brendan McIver, Joanna McIver, Connor McIver, Elizabeth McIver; great-grandchildren, Chloe, Sloan, Layne, Hannah, Riley, Zachery, Jayda, Taylor; and sister Louise Venuti of San Jose, California. Dr. McIver was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Albert and Dr. William McIver. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 18, 2014 from the Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Inurnment has taken place in the Camrose Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the charity of one's choice.
