Robert Van Petten

Obituary of Robert Sidney Van Petten

Robert  "Sid" Sidney Van Petten

(July 9, 1956 - July 16, 2023)

Sid was born in Camrose on July 9, 1956. Sid spent five months at the U of A Hospital after suffering from a ruptured brain aneurysm and the many complications that followed. He passed away on July 16, 2023, at the age of 67.

He grew up on the family farm southwest of Kelsey, attending school at Rosalind and the Camrose Composite High School. He enjoyed competition, participating in Track & Field and playing football for the Trojans.

Upon completion of school, he worked as a buggy operator for Hauser Construction, an apprentice mechanic at Kelsey Farm Equipment, and an elevator helper for Alberta Wheat Pool at Strome before becoming a Plumber & Gas Fitter. He apprenticed under Ron Severson at Rose City Plumbing & Heating until Ron’s death at which time Sid purchased the company. Since Sid did not have his ticket at that time, he had to hire a plumber so he could finish his apprenticeship. He was very mechanically inclined referring to himself as Mr. Fix-it or Silicone Sid. He successfully operated Rose City Plumbing & Heating until his passing.

He had many interests including snowmobiles, quads, cars, and anything he could race, fastball, slow pitch, music, golf, and most recently, his three wonderful grandchildren. His sons, Wesley and Curtis were born in 1983 and 1985 respectively. Sid married Peggy Gabourie in June 1994 and they made their home in Ohaton until he fell ill earlier this year.

Sid leaves to mourn his wife, Peggy; sons Wesley and Curtis (Kim); grandchildren Declan, Ravenna, and Brixton; brother Norman (Brenda); sisters Val (Dale) Falk and Marj (Stan) Pudlowski; sister-in-law Virginia Van Petten; brother-in-law Dan Campbell; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Sid was predeceased by his parents Stewart and Clarece: sisters Kathy, Diane, Connie, and brothers Arnold and Dennis.

A funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 28, 2023, at the Norsemen Inn, 6505 - 48th Ave Camrose, officiated by Rev. Brian Hunter.

If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Sid's memory may be made to the Stollery Children's Hospital or to the MS Society.
