Barbara Elaine Barnes of Camrose passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at the age of 81 years with her family by her side. Barbara Elaine Smart was born July 21st, 1932 to May and Arthur Smart. She grew up in Edmonton and spent many summers at Grandma and Grandpa Wells' cottage at Alberta Beach. She had a great love for Chihuahuas' - "Teddy & Cappy" and men in Uniform. "Dick" Barnes looked great in his Red Serge and they married in September of 1954. Soon after Don and Cathy arrived and the family moved to Red Deer and then on to Camrose where Patty made her appearance. Mom devoted her time to family activities like camping, children's clubs and volunteer work. As the kids grew Mom's career moved to Prairie Farm Assistance, Alberta Hail and Crop and then into the family business "Barnes Furniture". In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, needlework, volunteering and playing the piano. As grandchildren arrived she cherished the hours spent with each one. She was involved in each of their lives relishing their achievements. Their retirement years were spent traveling to B.C., camping in their RV and spending time with family. After 45 years of marriage Dad passed away and Mom's dementia grew evident but her spirit and personality continued to shine through. Throughout her struggles she continued to Smile. A Funeral Service was held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 1, 2014 from Camrose United Church with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Interment has taken place in the Camrose Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to St. Mary's Hospital, the Alzheimer Society, or to S.T.A.R.S..
