Obituary of Don Steere

Don Steere of Camrose passed away on Wednesday, January 22,2014 at the age of 72 years. Born - John Donald Steere - on Febuary 19, 1941. Don was the youngest child of Wilfred "Bill" and Ruby Steere. His siblings are Rodney Steere, Darline Poeckens (Merle) and Terry Steere (Velma). He married Sherran Lee Grettum in Camrose on November 4, 1961. They had three children Kelly, Shona and Tony. Don and Sherran had 52 happy years together, farming and raising his pride beef. In 1976 Don decided to add a new adventure to his life and started Diamond Acre Sod. Don always made sure his immediate family was taken care of first, however his generousity extended out to the community which includes the rest of the family, friends and neighbors. Especially in the winter, he always made sure he was out to plow the road and the driveways to make sure everbody could get to work and their kids could get to school. Don spent countless hours taking care of his cattle and other numerous animals on the farm. Don was a devoted family man, always looked forward to holidays and get-togethers. Don enjoyed curling for many years, bowling and playing cards. One of Don's most proud moments was planning the Roose Reunion which was a great success. In August of 2012, Don was diagnosed with his second bout of cancer. This news is when Don decided it was time to retire and sell the farm. After countless hours in and out of the hospital and numerous other complications throughout his treatment, Don defeated cancer once again. By spring of 2013, Don was back on the farm getting everything ready for the auction. He continued to clean up as much as he could until October of 2013 when he was diagnosed with his third bout of cancer. This never stopped Don. He continued to fight and tell everbody when he was in the hospital, what had to be done at the farm before it was to be sold. Don fought a long and hard battle right to the time he decided to start his new journey of life. Don is survived by his wife Sherran; daughters Kelly and Shona, and son Tony (Denise); followed by his six grandchildren Sarah, Breanna, Earl, Larry, Cody, Jordan; and his beloved dog Maggie. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. from the Camrose United Church (4829 50 Street) with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Inurnment has taken place in the Camrose Cemetery. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the charity of one's choice.
