Dorothy May Agar

(May 24, 1942 - February 8, 2021)

Dorothy May Agar (Smith) was born May 24, 1942, in Oshawa, Ontario.  She passed away peacefully in her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Camrose, Alberta on February 8, 2021, at 78 years young.

Dorothy was the youngest of six children born to Wilbert and Gladys Smith.  Left to remember her are her children Steven, Paul and Julie (Rob) Hawtin; grandchildren Justin (Becca), Kelsie, Bradley, Colin, Connor, Lyndsey, and Gracie (and Gracie’s mom Lisa); step grandkids Ryan (Jamey), Lindsey (Mike), Mitchell (Kelli) and Tanner (Annette) and step great-kids Madden, Ryland, Chadwick, Reynolds, Hadley, Huxley and Vance. Survived also by her siblings Ross (Anita), Ken, Shirley Wichall, her sister-in-law Donna, and many nieces and nephews.  Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, siblings Helen (Smith) and Cliff, brothers-in-law Jack Smith and Ken Wichall, and sisters-in-law Gerda and Val.

Dorothy was known affectionately to friends and family by Gert in her young adult life but I don’t know if it was ever determined why her friends started calling her that!
Graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1963 from the Hospital for Sick Children School of Nursing in Toronto. She worked in Paediatrics, Post Surgical, and Long Term Care in various facilities in Ontario and Alberta. She retired from Nursing in 2007 from Banff Springs Hospital Long Term Care facility. Her residents were very fond of her as a caring nurse and she was very fond of them too and would often volunteer to take them on outings. She even decided to work part-time as a school bus driver and was very proud of her Ontario Class B license! She was not one to hang her hat anywhere for too long!  She lived in Oshawa, Guelph, Arthur, Petrolia, Strathroy, London, Scarborough, Mississauga Ontario; Cold Lake, Banff, Lake Louise, Canmore, Exshaw and finally settled in Camrose Alberta for her retirement. I’m sure I have forgotten a few towns in there!

She played piano and fond memories included sneaking down the stairs to listen to her play hymns after my bedtime. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and travelling; by land, sea and air! Everyone loved to receive knitted dishcloths from her.  There’s no way of knowing how many pajama pants she made everyone over the years!  Her road trips were legendary and her few different Pontiacs never let her down, particularly her green Aztec (The Frog)!  She loved to take her grandchildren on these road trips all over Canada and into the States.  Mount Rushmore was a particularly special place for her as were the Canadian Rockies, Cape Breton and PEI.  She loved taking us as young kids to Canada’s Wonderland and the grandkids to amusement parks and the Calgary Stampede. She enjoyed her cruise ship trips all over the world with good friends from Nova Scotia. She met many new friends on these cruises. She loved flying to hot Caribbean locales and laying in the sun with friends and family too. She had some very good friends in her apartment building in Camrose and their four-legged friends.  She loved to dance and had quite lively feet. Light as a feather and I imagine a great dance partner. She loved to turn up the music in her car when she travelled and often sang along! She loved her four-legged companions with all her heart, particularly her dog Gidget, her cats Snuffy and Angel, and her most recent snuggle bug, Rambeaux the Yorkie!

There will not be service for Dorothy but you are encouraged to remember and celebrate her life in your own special way.
