Obituary of Lyle Holm

Please share a memory of Lyle to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lyle Holm of Camrose passed away on Friday, November 8, 2013 at the age of 75 years. Lyle Holm was born in Camrose, on June 23, 1938 to Leroy and Lillian Holm (nee Sjolie). When he was ten years old, Lillian passed away, leaving Lyle to spend his formative years in the loving care of his maternal grandparents, Oscar and Olga Sjolie of Camrose. After completion of high school in Camrose, Lyle spent several enjoyable years driving trucks. He drove for Camrose Transfer; Highway 13 Transport and the City of Camrose, proudly receiving an award for one million miles of safe driving. Joining the Camrose Volunteer Firefighters started a new career for Lyle. After completing several courses in Vermillion and Edmonton, he became the first full time Fire Prevention Officer and Director of Emergency Measures for the City of Camrose. He subsequently joined the Alberta Government as an Advisor of Fire Services, which included instructing classes at Alberta Fire Training School in Vermillion, as well as inspecting Fire Departments in Southern Alberta. Lyle completed his career at head office in Edmonton, retired and returned to Camrose. Lyle had a great zest for life. He loved music and was an accomplished harmonica player and liked to think he could play the drums and a little piano. Many great times and friendships were made at Hose Coupling events throughout the province. He loved spending time with people, assisting at Cub Scouts, refereeing hockey, playing broomball, being a Camrose rink rat, and painting landscapes. He hunted, fished and golfed with his sons and father-in-law, Gordon Mayhew. We have many memories of the laughter Lyle generated at parties and around the campfire. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Eleanor; sons Mark (Pat Tucker) Holm of Boyle, Robert (Lori) Holm of St. Albert, Dan (Brenda) Holm of Camrose; six grandchildren, Stephen, Dylan, Liam, Jacinda, Joelle, and Casara, as well as several brother and sisters in law, nieces and nephews. Lyle was predeceased by his parents; an infant brother Robert; mother-in-law Anna Mayhew; and brother-in-law Ken Hanak. A funeral service was held on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. from the Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Larry Pederson officiating. Inurnment has taken place in the Camrose Cemetery. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Camrose Food Bank.
