Obituary of Melvin Wiberg

Please share a memory of Melvin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Beloved husband, treasured father and adored Grandpa, Melvin (Mel) Fredrick Wiberg (June 9, 1922 - August 8, 2013), went home to heaven at the age of 91. Mel is survived by his dearly devoted wife, Lillian; children Marlene (Rob) Pollock, Dale (Heather), Doreen (Darcy) Thompson and Colleen; grandchildren, Shane (Danielle), Jessica, Daniel, Alec (Tara), Angela (Devon), Vaughn, Erin, Colby (Melanie), Travis, Dallas, Mitchell and Danielle and five great grand-children. He is also survived by brother Les (B.J.) and sister Vina Vanouck; sisters-in-law, Elaine and Elsie; brother-in-law Harvey (Mildred) Pederson. Mel was predeceased by his first wife, Irene Tweten and infant son Doug as well as siblings, Jessie, Lewis, Irene, Leo and Ralph. Mel was born at Duhamel Alberta, June 9, 1922 to Jennie (McGovern) and John Wiberg and resided there all his life. After a stint in the Air Force and jobs mining and logging in B.C., Mel received a phone call that his father had been killed in a tractor accident. Mel came home and took control of the family farm to help his mother and to help raise his younger brothers. It was also about this time that Mel realized he had a problem with alcohol and attended his first AA meeting in the back room of a local café in Camrose. Recently Mel celebrated his 56th AA birthday and remained active in AA, until the end of his life by the grace of God. Besides his passion for AA, Mel loved all sports especially fastball and hockey. He coached all of his children in softball. He and Lil enjoyed dancing and their many trips to Las Vegas. He was a gentle giant and had a soft heart for all of God's creatures including his loyal dogs Nigs and Cooter. While we mourn our heavy loss, we are confident we will meet again. Our beloved Mel is home to glory, safe in the arms of Jesus. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. from the Camrose Church of God (4722 55 Street) with Rev. Gary Mize officiating. Interment has taken place in the New Norway Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or the charity of one's choice.
