Obituary of Dale Winder

Please share a memory of Dale to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dale Albin Winder was born April 8, 1943, in Viking, Alberta, to Albin Isador, and Anna Althea Carolina (Ekdahl) Winder. Surrounded by his loving family, Dale passed away peacefully on May 31, 2013 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by his parents, and a brother-in-law, Donald Harrison, Dale leaves to mourn his loving wife of 46 years, Sylvia; son Darin (Heidi) Winder and their children Nissa and Anika; daughter Cheryl (Joe) Cordes and their children Rachel and Nathaniel; daughter Brenda (Guy) Murdock; sisters Shirley (Gerald) Widlake, Margaret (Jack) Bosgra ; Gloria (Don) Harrison, Fern (David) Lindholm; nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Dale grew up in Alberta, and in his early years the family frequently had to move (9 times in 8 years), because of his dad's work with BA Oil Company. Fortunately for Dale, making new friends came easily. He finished his high school education in New Norway where the family finally settled when he was 11 years old. His godly mother, Althea, made sure Dale and his siblings attended Sunday school and church growing up, and in his teens he was part of a vibrant youth group. Dale often talked of the wonderful summers spent at Miquelon Lake Bible Camp where his faith and trust in God were strengthened. Dale's greatest passion however, was sports, --in particular he loved playing baseball and hockey. After high school graduation, Dale was one of 17 students to attend the brand new "Trinity Junior College (now Trinity Western University)" in Langley, B.C. He was the first student body president, and also sang bass with the first quartet to travel throughout the USA and Canada to promote the fledgling College. Dale has a love of gospel music, and this past year a highlight for him was to return to TWU for its 50th anniversary, and to again sing with the "original" quartet. He, and the quartet, did a marvelous job! It was also at TWU where Dale met, and married in 1966, the love of his life, Sylvia Barth. He continued his education at the University of British Columbia in the Faculty of Education, after which he taught school in Alberta for 1 year, and BC for 9 years. It was in 1975 that Dale and Sylvia moved back to Alberta, where they lived and raised their family in the small town of Kingman. Dale also changed vocations at that time and worked as an RV salesperson for 15 years, was in partnership in running a business in the oil field industry for 8 years, and then took his "turn" working at the Camrose Steel Plant before retiring in 2009. We will always remember Dale for his loving concern and respect for family and others. Everyone he met was important to him, and he selflessly put others before himself, which was shown by his willingness for helping and giving to all who crossed his path. These past five months the hospital staff enjoyed Dale's quick wit and sense of humour, and often commented on his kind eyes and warm smile. His honesty, integrity, quiet faith, and strength were a role model for his children, family, and friends to look up to, and he will always be remembered and admired by those who knew him because, during his lifetime, he didn't "tell us how to live - he showed us". A funeral service was held on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. from the Kingman Baptist Church with Pastor Richard Schultz officiating. Interment followed in the Kingman Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to The Kingman Cemetery Fund, St. Mary's Palliative Care, or to Prostate Cancer Canada.
