Obituary of Ruth Steiger

Mrs. Ruth Steiger of Camrose, Alberta passed away on Wednesday May 8, 2013 at the age of 88 years. Our mother, Ruth Semon, was born in Okotoks. She lived in Calgary with her father and mother until her mother died when she was nine. She took care of her Dad and her youngest sister, Isabel. They moved from Calgary to Black Diamond where her Dad built a blacksmith shop. There she met and married Gordon Steiger. A year later, he was in the army and sent to Newfoundland for three years in WWII. Mom stayed with her Dad's parents for three years during WWII until Dad was discharged. He then returned to the Oil Company. They lived in Devon, Redwater and Red Deer. Some of Mom's most treasured memories were of her Aunt Dixie, two years older than her, they spent a lot of time together in their teens, riding horses, and playing football after school. Mom raised seven children and even though she was strict, they all challenged her in their own way. Sometimes she and Dad would find a few minutes together under the Devon Bridge on their way home from shopping, until the Devon police checked them out. Mom was predeceased by her sister Isabel; her husband Gordon; and her son Daniel. Left to mourn her passing are her six children Ed (Sylvia) of Devon, Veronica Kelly (Doug Freeman) of Camrose, Ruth (Marvin) Wagner of Rollyview, Liz Macdonald of Red Deer, Kathy (Dean) Wakey of Sylvan Lake and Bart (Shandra) of Airdrie; fourteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held on Saturday May 11, 2013 at 1:00pm from the Bethany Meadows Chapel. (4209 55 street Camrose) with Rev. Norm Lentz officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
