Obituary of Mary Weir

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Weir died peacefully in hospital Sunday morning, after suffering a stroke at home in Camrose on Saturday night. Mary grew up on a farm near Vegreville, the daughter of Daniel and Dorothea Hughes (nee Whittaker), and sister to George and Hilliard. She moved to Edmonton to study nursing at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, R.N. class of 1948-1. After graduation she worked in Belleville, Ontario with classmates for a short time, but returned to work at the Royal Alex , where she met her husband-to-be, Dr. J.R. (Ramsay) Weir. They married in 1955, and moved to Camrose in 1960. Mary leaves behind five children -Elizabeth, Margaret, Jim, Ian, and Barbara - their spouses Joe, Bill, Marie, Brenda and Brent - and 14 grandchildren: Michael, Patrick, Ian and Mark Miller; John, David and Mary Jean Andreassen; Heather and Thomas Weir; Ben, Laura and Andrew Weir; and Liam and Brennan Shepherd. Mary is also survived by her brother George Hughes (Doreen), of Edmonton, their children Brent, Brian and Karen and families; her sister-in-law Beth Toor, of Middlebury, Vermont and her children Helen, John, and Will and families; her sister-in-law Sharon Wansbrough, of Stony Plain; and extended family and friends. Mary was predeceased by her husband Ramsay in 2007; her parents, Daniel and Dorothea Hughes; her brother Hilliard Hughes; her niece Elizabeth Weir; her grandson Anthony Weir; and brothers-in-law Herb Toor and John Weir. Mary was an active member of St. Andrew's Anglican Church in Camrose, where she made many good friends. She was a lifetime member of the A.C.W., and a leader of the Junior Auxiliary and Brownies, where she particularly liked singing with the girls. She enjoyed getting together with her neighbourhood friends for coffee, bridge, and bowling, in years gone by. She had fond memories of her years at the Royal Alex, and enjoyed many class reunions over the years. Mary was a very supportive wife, mother, and grandmother, and put a lot of miles on her Volkswagon Beetle (and a few other vehicles) getting kids and grandkids to music lessons, clubs and sporting activities. She spent many evenings cheering on their efforts. The Weir family wishes to thank the Camrose Ambulance Service, and St. Mary's Hospital Emergency and Palliative Care Staff, for their care. Thanks also to the staff and residents at Deer Meadows, for their friendship and support over the last 14 months. The funeral service was held at St. Andrew's Anglican Church (4713 50 Street, Camrose), 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, April 7th, 2012, with Rev. Jacques Vaillancourt officiating. Burial of cremated remains in the Camrose Cemetery will follow. If desired, donations in Mary's name may be made to St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Camrose, or to a charity of one's choice.
