Please share a memory of Alan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alan Gordon Wilson of New Norway, Alberta passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the age of 77 years. Alan Wilson, of New Norway, Alberta, died early Saturday morning at St. Mary's Hospital in Camrose after a long struggle with congestive heart failure. Alan was born in Calgary, Alberta on March 29th, 1934. When Alan was 14 months old, he and his sister Marie, were adopted by Jessie and Gordon Wilson of Duhamel, who were delighted to finally become parents. Alan grew up working on the farm at Duhamel, sowing the seeds for his lifelong passion for his farm. As a young man, Alan considered pursuing a career as a pilot, and left the farm for a short time. However, when his father became terminally ill, Alan returned to take over the farm. He remained there until his death, steadfastly determined to carry on his farming operation, despite his failing health. Alan was actively involved in the purebred cattle business for many years, and took great pride in his purebred shorthorn herd. As a young man, he was present at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto when his steer took the top spot as Grand Champion. Alan will be remembered for his ardent determination and independence, his willingness to stand firmly with his beliefs, his resourcefulness, and his unfailing work ethic. He had very high expectations of others, but ultimately, his highest expectations were of himself. Alan is survived by his sister, Marie Knudsen, his friend and companion, Lois Saby, his nephew, Les Knudsen, and three nieces and their families: Beth Branting, Kathryn and her husband Bryan Graff, and Jill Knudsen and her husband, Mark Mendelson. He is also survived by Lois' children and their families, who were a special part of his life. Many treasured relatives in the Ross and Wilson families also survive Alan. He was fiercely independent, but was deeply grateful for the many acts of kindness bestowed upon him in these last months by his neighbors and friends. A funeral service was held on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from the Camrose United Church with Rev. Alan Richards officiating. Memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the charity of one's choice.
