Mrs. Katherine Lesku of Camrose passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at the age of 79 years. Katherine was born June 22, 1930 to parents Theresa and Leopold Steiner in Szomar, Hungary. She went to school only to Grade 7 because of the outbreak of World War II. Life was very tough and during the war her father was killed when their house was destroyed by a bomb. In 1946 the German speaking people were ordered out of Hungary so her mother took her and her brother and moved to Germany. In 1948, she married Ludwig Lesku. They had one daughter in 1950. Then, Ludwig had the opportunity to come to Canada in 1952. When he gained employment here he sent for his family. In 1953, they moved to Camrose and a second daughter was born in 1955 and a son in 1957. In 1963, she started employment at St. Mary's Hospital. When Ludwig passed away in 1965, with three young children to raise she took additional part-time jobs to make ends meet. She retired in 1992 from St. Mary's Hospital because of health reasons. She kept herself busy with her gardening, cooking and spent time with family and friends. Also she took classes in ceramics and volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital until she was no longer able to. She is survived by her son Andrew(Sandy), her daughter Hildegarde, her son-in-law David, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, one brother Leopold Steiner and his family in Germany. She was predeceased by her husband Ludwig, daughter Mary and son-in-law Brett. A Prayer Vigil was held on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 from the Burgar Memorial Chapel at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 11:00a.m. from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Eduardo Escober as Celebrant. Interment followed in the Camrose Cemetery. If friends so desire memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to The Diabetes Assocation or the charity of one's choice.
