Please share a memory of Roy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Roy Nixon, formerly of Edmonton, was born to Thomas and Florence Nixon in Stockport, Cheshire, England on June 7, 1932 and passed away in Camrose, Alberta on August 22, 2011 after a lengthy illness. He was a voracious reader, steeped in history, avid about automobiles, enthusiastic about steam trains, a talented model railroad builder, a serious soccer fan, a classical music buff and, especially, a devoted Grandfather. Roy graduated from the University of Manchester as a Chemical Engineer in 1955. Following his graduation he came to Canada and began working at the Dupont plant in Kingston, Ontario. In 1958 he moved to Alberta to work for the Canadian Chemical Plant(Chemcell) where he remained until August, 1970. Roy became a Federal Civil Servant shortly thereafter when he was hired into the fledgling Department of the Environment in Ottawa. In 1973 Roy was transferred back to Edmonton where they lived until after his retirement in 1996. Roy realized a long held dream when he and Barbara moved to an acreage west of Stony Plain where he supervised the erection of two large radio towers for the transmission of amateur radio messages, achieving contact with people in 303 countries/radio entities. Roy and Barbara moved to Camrose in 2002 where he lived until his recent death. Roy had been an active member of the Northern Alberta Sports Car Club. In Edmonton he spent a great deal of his spare time coaching children's soccer teams and building model railroads. Roy is survived by his wife, Barbara, his children; Diane Sekuloff, Tom (Christy Campbell), and Elaine Nixon (Murray Farness), as well as his grandchildren: Ruth, Damien, Ben, and Campbell. He also leaves his sister, Marian and her husband, Ron Gregory, his cousin, André (Jacky) Lister and two nephews in England. He was predeceased by his parents. A funeral service for Roy was held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, 4713-50 Street in Camrose. In lieu of other tributes donations may be made to the Camrose Railway Museum and Park, Box 1174, Camrose, AB T4V 1X2
