Obituary of Fred Heck
Frederick "Fred" Lorne Heck
(February 10, 1940 - March 15, 2024)
Frederick Lorne Heck of Camrose passed away peacefully on March 15, 2024, at the age of 84.
Fred was born on February 10, 1940 to John and Genevieve Heck. He married Bernice Miciak on August 14, 1965. Fred and Bernice settled in St. Paul for two years while he worked for the Northern Alberta Dairy Pool. In 1967 they relocated their family to Camrose and Fred began working for National Home Furniture as a truck driver and then a salesman. He eventually purchased the business with partner, Jim Oleson, and operated it until his retirement in 1999.
Fred was an active community member and he participated in a variety of sports including hockey, baseball, curling, golf and billiards. He was a true competitor, participating in pool tournaments in Las Vegas on several occasions and won a gold medal for golf in the Alberta Senior Games in 1999.
One of Fred’s greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and Bernice never missed a grandchild’s sporting event. You could always find Fred at the rink or ball diamonds watching a game even if he didn’t know who was playing. During his retirement, he became a devoted fan of the Camrose Kodiaks and Augustana Vikings hockey teams.
Fred loved visiting and playing cards and lived for his weekly bridge games and crib tournaments at the senior’s centre. Music was also a passion of Fred’s and he loved singing with his family and friends. He always had the radio dialed into CFCW and he would sing along to all the tunes.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, Bernice; sons Darrell (Shelley) and Dale (Leslie); six grandchildren Jordan (Chantal) Heck, Amanda Heck, Jana (Evan) Armstrong, Jelise (Colin) Weller, Hannah (Jarod) Hovde and Devin (Alexandra) Heck; and seven great-grandchildren Saige, Clarke, Mya, Graycen, Hayden, Wrenley and Parker.
He is also survived by his brother Ed (Elaine) Heck; sister Clara Lohner; and brothers-in-law Brian (Margaret) Miciak and Ron Miciak.
Fred was predeceased by his parents John and Genevieve Heck; brothers John, Florean, George and Ross; mother and father-in-law Pete and Steffie Miciak; sisters-in-law Edna Heck, Eileen Heck, Elaine Hauser and Audrey Makarowski; and brothers-in-law Gerald Miciak, Marvin Lohner, Lorne Hauser and Lawrence Makarowski.
A Funeral Mass was held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 22, 2024, at the St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, 3605 50 St Camrose celebrated by Father Kris Schmidt and Father Chad Miciak.
