Obituary of Donald Gilbert Gunderson

Donald Gilbert Gunderson

(June 2, 1947 - March 12, 2023)

Donald Gilbert Gunderson (affectionately known as Gunny) was born in High River, Alberta on June 2, 1947, to Cornell and Phyllis; the youngest of three children.  He passed away on March 12, 2023.

He grew up on a farm and attended school in Forestburg and later moved to Red Deer and graduated from Red Deer Composite High School. Don had many interests which lead to his many careers in drilling, mechanics, aviation, heavy-duty equipment operation, land reclamation, and welding. Don met his first wife Victoria and was blessed with two daughters and a son.
Later on in life, he met and married the love of his life, Val, and was again blessed with two daughters.

Don loved playing guitar, and often attended jam sessions at the Alice Hotel; riding motorcycles with his childhood friends Fraser and Ronny, hunting, fishing, camping at Buck Lake, cooking, and watching Nascar races and Toronto Blue Jay’s games with Val. He was brutally honest and direct, hardworking, and had high expectations of those around him. Don was a loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

Don was pre-deceased by his parents Cornell and Phyllis; and granddaughter Megan Chromik. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Val; sisters Anita and Alberta; children Carie Gunderson, Kristine (Dan) Laughy, Kurt Gunderson, Kylie (Barry) Cryderman, and Katie (Wayne) Gunderson; fourteen grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
