Obituary of Joseph Michael Orcheski

Joseph "Joe" Michael Orcheski

(September 13, 1944 - January 30, 2023)

Joseph "Joe" Michael Orcheski of Camrose, Alberta, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2023 at the age of 78 years.

Joseph Michael Orcheski was born August 31, 1944, but was not registered until September 13, 1944.  His story regarding this discrepancy is that his mother Paulina was stooking hay when he was born and had left him by a stook, but could not remember which one for two weeks.  Joe is the ninth child of ten, born to Nicholas and Paulina of the Round Hill area.  He took all his schooling in the Round Hill area.

Joe was working in Vancouver at the Simon Fraser University when he met his love, Georgina Foss.  They were married in September 1968.

In 1965, Joe took over the family farm from his parents.  In the spring of 1983, Joe decided he wanted to do something different from grain farming and raising cattle, so he and Georgina went looking and came home with six bison heifer calves, and two bison bull calves. This began a 40 year career of raising bison; stressing quality over quantity, which he did very well.  Joe has over 100 trophies and banners showcasing his success.  He has shown at bison shows and sales all over Canada and the USA. He has also sold trophy bison across Canada, the USA, and into Germany, and still has a few bison on the farm today.

Joe and Father Larry Pederson attended school together, were altar boys together, and played hockey together.

Joe is survived by his wife of 54 years, Georgina; his brothers Stanley (Linda), Louis (Carol), Casmer and Philip; sisters-in-law Jane Orcheski, Eileen Staal, and Noreen Foss; brothers-in-law Arnold (Ria) Foss, Harvey (Doreen) Foss, Ken Foss, and Larry (Karen) Campbell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe was predeceased by his parents Nicholas and Paulina; father and mother-in-law George and Grace Foss; four sisters; one brother; and many other family members.
