Obituary of Alice Nowek
ALICE NOWEK (nee ELCHUK) May 16, 1934 – September 25, 2020
With sadness and heartbreak, we mourn the loss of our dear mother, Alice Nowek aka “Granny” who died suddenly in her home. We celebrate her life as a loving, caring and kind mother, Granny and Great Granny. Always putting us first! She will be truly missed by all of us and so many others!
Alice was born in Haliczany, Poland (named Halina). Her family immigrated to Canada when she was two years old to a farm in the Hines Creek, Alberta, area. After arriving in Canada, her sister, Jenny, and her brother, Steve were born. In 1950, Alice married the love of her life, Aleck, who had courted her by picking her up on his tractor to take her to barn dances. Alice was a hardworking farm wife and their firstborn was a daughter, Linda, followed by Leon and Lorraine. After selling the farm in 1967, Aleck and Alice bought the poolhall in Hines Creek where she worked alongside Aleck, as well as at the local post office, until 1972 when they sold the business and moved to Vernon, B.C. She worked for many years at Consumer’s Glass, retiring as a Ware Inspector at age 60. Emerald Gardens in Grande Prairie was her next residence for 12 years until her final move to Camrose in 2015 where she resided at Hillside Village. She will be missed by the many friends at the United Church and various volunteer organizations that she served.
Alice is survived by a daughter, Linda (Don) Lowe of Camrose, AB; son Leon (Julie) Nowek of Krakow, Poland and daughter Lorraine (Fred) Euverman of Terrace, B.C. Her seven grandchildren: Brian (Nicole) Lowe, Janice (Mark) Tofsrud; Adam (Soumia) Nowek, Ashleigh (Daniel) Braaten; Jared (Danna) Euverman, Lisa Euverman (Daniel) and Megan Euverman (James) and four great-grandchildren: Erin & Joshua Lowe and Natalie & Marley Tofsrud were the light of her life. Also survived by sister Jenny (late Lawrence) King and brother Steve (Betty) Elchuk, as well as numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
She was predeceased by her parents Paul & Nettie Elchuk and husband, Aleck.
As per Alice’s wishes, no funeral will be held. A private family gathering will take place in Vernon, B.C. at a later date.
