Obituary of Douglas James Burkard

Douglas James Burkard

(September 8, 1946 - December 19, 2019)

Douglas James Burkard of Camrose, Alberta, formerly of Rosalind, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at the age of 73 years.

Doug grew up on the family farm near Rosalind.  On August 24, 1968 Doug married Anne Bendfeld, at which time they purchased the family farm. It was here they raised their three children, Sue, Duane and Kevin. After Doug’s traumatic accident in September, 2017, he was unable to continue farming and a very difficult decision to leave the farm brought them to Camrose in August, 2018.  

Left to cherish Doug’s memory are his loving wife Anne; children Sue Nelson (Kirby Fowler), Duane (Lisa) Burkard, Kevin (Linda) Burkard; and five grandchildren Rebecca, Julie, Jordan, Tyler, Colton. Doug is also survived by his siblings, Eldon (Sharon), Leon (Carrol), Joanne (Ed) Szumlas, Dennis (Rita), Don (Margaret), Kathy (Mick Smith), Theresa (Perry) Gubersky; brother-in-law Allen Freadrich (Jeanette); the Bendfeld family; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Evelyn Burkard; infant brother Francis; sister Marlene Freadrich; father-in-law Arnold Bendfeld; and sister-in-law Lynda Malick. 

For every act of kindness shown us, we are sincerely grateful. Your love and support have eased our heavy burden and given us a ray of sunshine in our darkest hours.  Our sincere thank you, and God bless you all.

A Funeral Mass was held at 11:00 a.m., Monday December 23, 2019 from the St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, with Rev. Joby Augustin officiating. Interment has taken place in the St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Rosalind.
