Esther Eva Mostowich

(July 13, 1941 - November 23, 2019)

Esther Eva Mostowich of Camrose, Alberta, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at the age of 78 years.

Esther Mostowich, born Esther Eva Tate, July 13, 1941 on the farm in Rosalind, Alberta to Lettie and Val Tate, the fourth of six children - Val, Mirle, Cliff, Esther, Barb and Vicky. At six years old, she attended her first movie, Song of the South, by herself, she enjoyed it so much she stayed and enjoyed it again. Esther found herself looking up at a very stern, very, very tall policeman who took her home to her frightened and not amused mom. She spoke of a poor, but happy childhood where no one was left out.

When she spotted young, handsome Tony Mostowich she said she would marry him. Her prediction became reality and Tony remained the love of her life. They settled in Fort St. John, BC.
They had five children - Tim (Michele), Darcy, Chris (Brenda), Wendy (Doug) and Gary (Sylvie). Esther was a fierce and protective mom. Her friends truly became her family, helping each other while husbands were away working. The kids celebrated group birthday parties and family picnics within this community. Esther enjoyed the endless hours of “coffee” and friendship.
Tony became ill, Esther looked after him, even taking a part-time job to ease his worry about her ability to support the family. After his death, Esther moved the family back to Camrose, with the help of family and friends and worked at the Family Thrift Shop for 25 years, where she retired, with joy, in 2002.
She never looked back; traveling with her kids, gardening, reading new recipes and cooking. The only thing that brought her more joy was grandchildren, whom she loved with all her heart. She was a stern but loving grandma, who saw the best in every child. Her grandchildren (Erika, Curtis, Garth, Erin, Kellie, Rebecca) and her precious great-grandchildren (Kane and Hadley) enjoyed her love and nurturing.
Esther became ill in May of 2019 and, in her feisty and stubborn way, refused to bend. She enjoyed friends, family and cooking right to the end, making sure to pass on her strict standards and huge knowledge of cooking and gardening.

Surrounded by family and friends throughout her illness, she lost her battle, peacefully on November 23.

Although heartbroken by the loss of such a vibrant soul, we are so grateful to have had such a special lady in the center of our family, always there, with love, advice and support. The quality of her friendships is felt by the support and love they have shown our family in this difficult time. Very special thanks to Dr. Letley, Olivia (home care nurse), Dr. Chapman and the staff of Palliative Care.  Donations to St. Mary’s Palliative Care, Unit 2.
