Vesta Bernice King

(July 11, 1927 - May 20, 2019)

Vesta Bernice King of Camrose AB passed away peacefully on Monday, May 20, 2019 at the age of 91 years.

She was born July 11, 1927 to Tabor and Lottie Ross and grew up with nine siblings in the Hastings Coulee area.  After attending Normal School in Edmonton and getting her teacher’s certificate, Vesta received her first teaching assignment at East Lynne School.   During her time there, she met Robert (Bob) King of Rosalind and they were married on April 8, 1947.  They started out their married life together at a farm in the Hastings Coulee area but after three years of crop failure, they moved back to Rosalind.  In 1953 Vesta was hired to substitute for a month at East Lynne School and then that fall, was hired to teach at the Rosalind School where she continued to teach until her retirement.  She was very involved in the community, belonged to the UCW and Royal Purple, the curling club, the Rosalind Ag Society and helped out at the Rosalind Drop-In Centre.  She loved to play cards, curl, crochet and knit.  Over the years she crocheted afghans for her children and grandchildren which we will all cherish forever.  She also loved gardening and camping.  After Bob passed away, she sold her trailer and bought a motor home so she could go on her own.  She and Bob did some travelling and after he was gone she continued to travel with her friends.

Vesta is survived by her daughters Sharon (Roger) Olesen and Janice (Alvin) Vos; four grandchildren Shawna (Clint) Sutter, Sandra (Gordon) Gee, Colette (Duane) Adam, and Steven Olesen; ten great-grandchildren Jenna and Justin Hrdlicka, Maya and Nicolas Gee, Davin, Karissa and Corbyn Sutter, Cooper and Carsen Adam  and Ariadne Olesen; two sisters Blanche Graumann and Shirley (Allen) Steinhoff; one brother Earl Ross; two sisters-in-law, Carol Ross and Leona Ross; as well as several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her husband Bob; her parents Tabor and Lottie Ross; her brothers Charles, Harold and Calvin; and her sisters Esther, Gladys, Eunice and Grace.

Vesta had a long fight with dementia and at the beginning, she often referred to her memory as being “as long as her nose.”  She loved life, her family and friends and will be missed by all.
