Obituary of Thomas "Tom" Bruce

Thomas Norman Bruce was born September 27, 1918, the youngest of eight children born to Jens and Ingeborg Bruce. Other than a short army training before WWII ended, Tom spend all but his last two years on the home farm. He attended his beloved Skudesness Church all of his life and was instrumental in it being here today. November 10, 1973, Tom married Delores Farness. A widow with five children. The love he showed for this new family knew no bounds and many more extended friendships were launched. Tom's gentle and quiet nature endured him to all. His love of family, friends and community showed us all how to live. Whether he was working, camping, playing cards, floor curling or up to mischief, that little wink and nod came through. As his health failed him, his mind remained sharp as a tack and he treasured the times family and friends came to visit. His faith never faltered. Knowing the Lord, comforted him to the end. After a lengthy illness Tom passed peacefully too his new life on Saturday, February 27, 2010 surrounded by family. Blessed be Tom's memory. Tom leaves to celebrate his life his wife Delores, four stepchildren Judy (Tom Knight), Cathy (Michael Schwab), Murray Farness (Elaine Nixon) and Mark Farness; his three grandsons Christopher Farness, Justin and Dalton Schwab. Tom is also survived by one sister-in-law Lorraine Glidden; two brothers-in-law Leon (Hazel) Olson and Larry Olson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Tom was predeceased by his stepson Robert Farness; his parents Jens and Ingeborg Bruce; his five brothers John (Sophia), Olaf (Margaret), Ingvald, Martin (Grace) and Gustave; his two sisters Nora (Arnold Shaw), Inga (Eivold Aspenes); one sister-in-law Cherie Olson and one brother-in-law Walter Glidden. Funeral services for Tom were held on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. from Skudesness Lutheran Church with Rev. Calvin Skriver officiating. Interment followed in the Skudesness Church Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Tom to Skudesness Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
